hiking directions (for backcountry) — There are multiple options. 1) Closest: park at the Hawthorne Circle and walk-in to reserved campsite. 2) Park at the Ranger Station / Visitor's Center and backpack due west from parking area to the Nature Trail past the outdoor seating/meeting area into the pine forest. At the fork take a right (east) on the Elm Fork Trail approximately 1.25 miles to Hawthorne. 3) Longer (approximately 4 miles): Start at the Elm East or Elm West picnic areas below the dam on Farm Road 455. On the Elm Fork Trail, hike east and north to the trail underpass then north toward the Nature Trail and to Hawthorne. 4) 8.5 miles. Start at the FM 428 access point and hike 4.5 miles north to the Elm East area. (There are trails on both side of the river.) 5) 15 miles. Start at the US 380 access point. Hike 6.5 miles north to the FM 428 Access Point and continue. 6) An alternate direction is start at Lone Star Lodge and hike south and then west on Jordan Park Trail for 4.5 miles to meet up on Elm Fork Trail on the other side of Isle Du Bois State Park Road. Then continue west for about a 1/4 mile to Hawthorne.
